Sometimes an online journal, other times an informational website, a is the internet’s way of indulging opinionated writers and coaching curious readers. It’s a place within the online universe where individuals (or groups of them) may voice their thoughts and share them with millions.

The blog’s definition is somewhat elusive, and the ways to describe it are numerous.

The most popular blogging niches tackle personal finance and development, health and fitness, beauty and fashion, and everyone’s favourite – food. Blogs can be deeply personal and introspective, resembling an online diary. When written by professional journalists, they possess enough power to influence business and politics.

There must be something mutual to all of them, right? Some universal characteristic in an otherwise multifarious world?

Ten characteristics of a blog

We’ve done some counting and ended up with ten main characteristics of a blog:

A common question about a blog is how it relates to a website – are these two essentially the same, or are there any differences between them? While websites are mainly presentational, blogs are always intended to engage. A website is therefore static, as opposed to a blog which must be dynamic.

The information offered by websites is presented on static pages, in a form of an evergreen content that doesn’t require any updates . Blog posts, on the other hand, are like diary entries; they include a publishing date and tags. New entries and regular updates are key for running any kind of blog.

Unlike with a personal diary written in a notebook, blog entries are displayed in reverse chronological order – the newest posts being on top. The latest ones push previously published ones down the list, until they completely disappear from the landing page. Older posts are usually archived on the following pages, but they can also be organized by the month or year when they were first published.

First comes a header with the menu or navigation bar to declutter the page and make a great first impression. It’s followed up by main content area on which blog posts appear either by order of publishing or by relevance. Down below are contact pages, privacy policies and relevant links, neatly arranged in a footer. A sidebar highlights favorite entries and displays social profiles and call-to-actions.

Andreen's latest post signals a shift from the ridiculous to the macabre. Only a mind accustomed to hatching such Byzantine plots would suspect them so readily in others. I don't blame him for getting a little paranoid though. Those damn "Dump Stocks" stickers are popping up everywhere.

The developer controlled ERAC commission have claimed that they DON'T want voters to decide on the General Plan Update, and they, along with Peder Norby have said that since the State would like to see us raise our level of density from 25 per acre being the highest to 30, that they will call it '30 Plus' but that really means '45 Units Per Acer.' They are also talking about 5-stories and 0'setbacks. Is it any wonder that they are scared to death that the voters will find out what they are after?

We have a business and we had actually thought about joining the New Encinitas Network for networking events, but there is no way now!

The nicest thing I can think of to say about this long time contributor to our community is that he has consistently and effectively presented himself to be a self serving asshole that has always left a vile unpleasant wake.

Andreen says in an earlier post about the GPAC and city staff want to, ..."create gridlock, the outlawing of personal transportation and the taking of private property." He then makes up a quotes and atributes it to a GPAC committee member.

Good idea! Its time to call all of the Coast News Advertisers to threaten them also, I can't believe the bias BS they print. Its time to call Jim Kidd out!

June 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Coast News is not a real paper - it nothing but a hit piece published by Jim Kidd...I can't believe the city actually pays to advertise in this fishwrap!

Jim Kidd and Andrew Audit are working on this together! It's time we pressure the advertisers to leave the Coast News. They both tried to ruin Peder Norby's reputation and professional career. Its time to go after those who live in glass houses. Who's paying them? They should get some of their own medicine (THEY and WE KNOW WHO THEY ARE!)

Our struggle is an odyssey of unwavering and remarkable endurance in the face of everything our oppressors have thrown at us!

Most of us saw this day looming in the distance threatening us with thunder and striking us with lightening. We’ve trailed the trends of oppression across the country and mapped the roads that led to this moment. We sounded the warning bells and readied the armor; we pleaded for an awakening and buckled down for constant vigilance. But we’ve also continued to operate as if it is business as usual; we’ve somehow found complacency in the predictable ebb and flow of power and oppression. We’ve clung doggedly to the tried and true, unwilling to flex our collective muscle and adapt our strategies to the situation at hand. We’re playing by a rule book that was buried in the backyard and forgotten about, only to wonder why the rules aren’t working. All the while our enemies continue to shape shift like tricksters in the night, even co-opting our philosophies for their approach and have repeatedly proven formidable opponents by taking an intersectional approach to keeping us underfoot. They are no longer satisfied with attacking one freedom at a time; they’ve attacked us on all sides at once while we still pay lip service to our own intersectionalities.

This is not to say the real and important work isn’t happening, I’ve caught wind and participated in some amazing movement building that inspires my spirit to great heights and fortifies my body to commit for the long haul. Across NYC we’ve been communicating and collaborating more, identifying the ways for us to converge on all the different issues we’re fighting around, and collectively brainstorming what our movement looks like in this unique moment of chaos and uncertainty. This moment calls for a flexibility of tactics, a willingness to question the ideas we’ve fostered and cultivated for so long, and the motivation to see it through even if it shakes the foundations of everything we knew before. Our struggle for liberation is also a struggle for the evolution of humanity, for us to be better versions of ourselves even when it calls our beliefs into question. It is our discomfort that spurs our growth and our willingness to pierce our own bubbles to reveal our vulnerabilities. I am so proud to be among creative minds, loving hearts and inspirational movement leaders, we are truly a force of nature and I know we’re ready to embrace that NOW.

While in Washington D.C. during the week of Inauguration when thousands came out to enthusiastically oppose the ceremony of our new Tortor 1Bacha Mens Retro Leather Cap Toe Oxford Shoes Tan tWr5WT
(I couldn’t very well pen this candid and thoughtful letter without a bit of humor), I was amazed and awed at the solidarity and grit of our people coming together around common cause while at the same time allowing space for our differences without division. One of the prominent reoccurring themes that emerged for me was the conundrum of conveying our stories, and recognizing that all of our stories are in need of telling but there will be moments when my story challenges you and yours will confront my own. How do we transport our stories from our heads to each other’s hearts without competing for that space? What does it mean to tamp down your defensiveness and judgment to deepen the substance of our collective message? If our message is what endears us to our communities and we desire a world of bonded inter-community power, shouldn’t that message encompass the stories of us all?

Congressman Ted Lieu

Representing the 33rd District of California
June 29, 2018
Press Release

Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) led a letter of 51 Members calling for the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General to open an investigation regarding reports that asylum-seekers are being turned away at the U.S.-Mexico border before being referred to an asylum officer. They also expressed dismay at Trump Administration policies that could compel families to choose between pursuing legal asylum claims or being reunited and then deported.

It has become increasingly evident that the Department of Homeland Security is turning away individuals seeking asylum at U.S. ports of entry. In May 2017, Human Rights First published a report that documented 125 cases of families and individuals who were denied an opportunity to pursue their asylum claims at a port of entry. This month, The Washington Post reported a story of a Guatemalan father and son who were blocked from the port of entry on the Paso del Norte Bridge at the Texas border. In some cases families are turned back because the agency purportedly lacks sufficient resources to process them. In other instances it appears that CBP officers are simply hostile to migrants, falsely telling them that the United States is not welcoming asylum seekers.

Further troubling are reports that CBP officers have improperly evaluated asylum claims or have forced asylum seekers to recant their fears. The aforementioned Human Rights First report alleges that CBP officers have falsely indicated on forms that certain individuals have not expressed a fear of return, writing instead that they have come to the United States for work. The organization also documented a case in which CBP officers repeatedly pressured a Mexican woman to recant her fear of return and indicated she would not be granted asylum. CBP officers are not trained in asylum law and should not be evaluating asylum claims. They should instead refer asylum seekers to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services asylum officers; however, it appears that too often CBP agents fail to refer these cases.

Finally, we are worried by the recently-announced Department of Homeland Security fact sheet about zero-tolerance prosecution and family reunification. This document states that parents who are being deported may request to have their child accompany them. This policy will likely encourage detained parents to drop not only their own but also their children’s asylum claims in hope of being reunited. Families should never have to choose between reunification and their legal right to seek refuge in this country.

We urge you to immediately open an investigation into the Department of Homeland Security’s potentially illegal treatment of asylum seekers at the southwest border, including the denial of access to asylum procedures, the pressure to recant fears of return and the implementation of a policy that incentivizes asylum seekers to forfeit their claims in order to be reunited with their children.
